This age old question still pops up all of the time, when should I take my protein?
I’m talking about protein shakes here and protein powders, not the protein that is in your food as you should already be considering this with every meal if you are looking to improve and recover efficiently.
There is many different times you can have your protein shake throughout the day, the timing of your protein can depend on many different factors.
These factors can include;
- What you are training for
- How often you train
- Can you eat through the day
- When you train throughout the day
- When your meal times are
- How many times a day you want to have protein
- What type of training you are doing
- What your goal is
These are just a few reasons and everyone is going to be different.
Also protein shakes can be used in place of meals if you want too or haven’t prepared yourself fully for your day, a protein shake is better than nothing at all.
There are certain windows of opportunity throughout the day for you to bump up your protein intake.
The times to take protein are;
- Before Breakfast
- Mid Morning
- Mid Afternoon
- Before Training
- After Training
- Before Bed
As you can see there is plenty of times you can sneak in a few more protein meals or shakes throughout the day.
The reason why people use protein shakes through the day is that they are easy to prepare, easy to digest and great for adding to your recovery from training.
In relation to the points above you have to make the decision that suits you and your goals at the time.
You may not need the extra protein and also with these extra shakes comes the cost too.
Most everyday trainers would benefit from three protein shakes a day having them in between their meals and also the most important after training protein shake.
So the answer for you for the best time for you to have protein, have protein throughout the day and after training and you can’t go wrong.
I hope this helps, keep an eye out for the next protein article.
